Mali IVF Journey
IVF, or In vitro fertilization, is a medical procedure where an egg is mixed with sperm outside the body to achieve fertilization. Then, one or more successfully fertilized eggs will be put back into the mother’s uterus for implantation. The typical IVF treatment cycle lasts about 4 to 6 weeks. Read more about IVF process here.
Initial consultation and fertility testing
Before starting IVF treatment, couples undergo an initial consultation, during which fertility tests are conducted to determine the cause of infertility and establish the most appropriate treatment plan
Pre-cycle testing
Your physician will order a panel of lab works that you can have performed. These testing results will help to decide your medication regimen
Ovarian Stimulation Cycle
The woman takes fertility medications to stimulate the production of multiple eggs in her ovaries. During ovarian stimulation, the woman’s response to the medications is closely monitored using ultrasound and blood tests to track the development and maturation of the eggs. This monitoring is done every 2-3 days until the eggs are ready for retrieval
Embryo Fertilization
When the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed. This process usually takes about 30-60 minutes and is performed under sedation or general anesthesia. The retrieved eggs are combined with sperm in the laboratory to facilitate fertilization. After fertilization, the resulting embryos are cultured for 3-5 days to reach the appropriate developmental stage
Embryo Transfer
The best quality embryo(s) are selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. This is a relatively quick procedure, usually taking about 30 minutes, and is performed under ultrasound guidance. Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is conducted to indicate whether the IVF cycle has resulted in pregnancy
Personal Travel Plan
Travel plans can be tailored further based on individual medical advice, personal circumstances, and preferences, ensuring that each patient’s needs and treatment requirements are met while they are in Thailand.

IVF Treatment FAQ
Yes, you may need to take some time off work for IVF, especially around key parts of the treatment like egg retrieval and embryo transfer, which require you to be at the clinic and may involve recovery time. The amount of time off can vary depending on how you respond to the treatment and the physical and emotional impact it has on you.
The IVF process typically spans about 4 to 6 weeks per cycle from start to finish. This includes the initial consultation, pre-treatment tests, ovarian stimulation (usually 10-14 days), egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo development, followed by embryo transfer. The timeline can vary depending on the specific protocols of the fertility clinic and your personal response to treatment.
Common side effects of IVF include bloating, mood swings, headaches, breast tenderness, and mild cramping. You may also experience reactions to fertility medications, such as hot flashes or injection site reactions. In rare cases, more severe effects like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can occur, characterized by swollen and painful ovaries.
Several lifestyle factors can impact fertility and the success of IVF treatments, including:
Age: Fertility naturally declines with age, particularly after the age of 35
Smoking: Smoking tobacco can reduce the chances of IVF success and affect egg quality
Alcohol and caffeine intake: High alcohol and caffeine consumption can negatively affect fertility
Weight: Being significantly over or underweight can affect hormone production and thus fertility
Diet and exercise: A balanced diet and regular, moderate exercise can improve fertility
Stress: High-stress levels can disrupt hormonal balance and affect ovulation and fertility
Adjusting these factors where possible can help improve the effectiveness of IVF treatment and overall reproductive health.
